Health professionals from the NHS in Leeds are reminding residents to plan ahead to stay well this summer.
Dr Sarah Forbes, GP Partner and Medical Director at the Leeds office of the NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said: “GP practices, hospitals and pharmacies are currently very busy, so it’s important to plan ahead and know which service to use if you become unwell this summer.
“Your local community pharmacist can offer advice on common ailments such as aches, pains, skin rashes and other minor illnesses.
“Your GP practice is also here for you. Within general practice, there are people working in several different roles – including advanced nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and physiotherapists. Working together, they will help get you the right care from the right professional.
“We’re urging the public to remember that hospital emergency departments are for life or limb emergencies, such as severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, significant head injuries or complex fractures.
“If you’re not sure where to go for help, visit www.111.nhs.uk online, which will point you to the right medical service for your needs. If you have a minor injury, such as a cut, sprain, burn or if you think you’ve broken a bone, 111 can help you get an appointment at an urgent treatment centre or minor injuries unit. You can also call 111 via phone when it’s urgent, but not a health emergency.”
Throughout the summer months, it’s also important to remember that the warm weather can pose health risks for some people. During sunny spells, remember to drink plenty of water, stay in the shade where possible during the hottest time of the day (11am-3pm), and wear sunscreen. Remember to look out for those who may feel the heat more acutely than others, such as young children or older people.
With COVID-19 infection rates increasing, the COVID vaccination is your best protection against serious illness. It’s not too late to get your vaccine – whether it is your first dose, second dose, or booster. Walk-in clinics continue to be available in Leeds, or you can book online at www.nhs.uk/covidvaccine. If you have symptoms of coronavirus, such as a high temperature; new, continuous cough; or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste, please do not go to a GP, pharmacy or hospital.
