Merger of Wetherby Surgery and Bramham Medical Centre and closure of Harewood branch surgery

Lead: Bramham Medical Centre

Partners: Wetherby Surgery, Leeds office of the NHS West Yorkshire ICB in Leeds

Period: 15th Nov 2023 - 31st Dec 2023

This involvement gave patients registered at the above practices an opportunity to share their views on the proposed closure of Harewood Branch Surgery.

Brief description of project

Representatives from Bramham Medical Centre and Wetherby Surgery have been in discussions about combining the two practices (a merger). As part of the merger, it was proposed that the Harewood branch surgery (part of Wetherby Surgery) be permanently closed. This closer is to enable the GP practices to ensure that the services are sustainable in the future.

The purpose of this involvement work is to inform patients, staff, and local people about these plans and to hear feedback about this proposal.

Who did we speak to?

The practice received 500 responses to the survey from patients registered at the practices, carers, staff, and local people.

What and how did we ask?

The practice asked people to share their views on the proposal to merge Bramham Medical Centre and Wetherby Surgery, and the closure of the Harewood branch practice. People were also asked what is important to them when accessing primary care services.

The practice wrote to all households registered at the practices. People were able to give their feedback using an online survey, paper survey, attending one of three public events, or by contacting the practices directly.

What did people tell us?

People told the practice about:

  • The importance of:
    • Continuity of care with healthcare professionals.
    • Having access to care close to home.
    • Good telephone access to the surgery.
  • Concerns about appointment availability at their preferred practice.
  • Concerns about closing Bramham Medical Centre in the future.
  • Lack of public transport options from Harewood to Wetherby.

What are we doing with people’s feedback?

To address some of the concerns raised during the involvement the practice are:

  • Recruiting three new permanent doctors (GPs) to avoid relying on locum clinicians.
  • Recruiting more staff to manage the telephone system.
  • Providing more clinics at Wetherby Surgery for Bramham patients.

It is expected that from 1 April 2024, Bramham Medical Centre and Wetherby Surgery will formally merge. The branch practice at Harewood has now closed.

How can you help?

It’s important we hear from people regularly about their experiences of using primary care services. By filling in the ‘Experience of my GP’ survey, you can tell us about a recent appointment you’ve had. This will help us understand what is working and what might need some improvement.
